Monday, 09/02/09Today is the submission of the In-Tech wall and the A1 board.
8:31 PM
Monday, 02/02/09Today, we had the last lecture of Year 1. This lecture is about spaces, and there’s exercise to do too. We are given one A4 paper and four small pieces of colored paper. And then cut and fold the small pieces of colored paper. The number of cut and fold were given by the lecturer. After that, stick the paper together to create interesting spaces. Give the whole space a purpose. I make it either a shopping mall or theater. There’s not much time left for me to do the real shophouse model. So, I decided to use white mounting board instead of true materials. This also means that my workmanship must be very good.

Friday, 06/02/09Today is the submission of the mood box, mockup and real shophouse model, TOD process journal and CADP drawings.

Nothing much about today. I just continued doing the projects. There’s a good news for us. The In-Tech wall submission date had been extended to next Mon (09/02), and we can choose either to submit real shophouse model this Fri (06/02), or next Mon (09/06). If we submit the real shophouse model this Fri, we can submit the A1 board next Mon. I chose to submit the real shophouse model this Fri, as there’s already no time for me to do the A1 board and go Peace Centre print.

Till now, I haven’t even started doing the real shophouse model, as I’ve been drawing out the shophouse in Autodesk VIZ and AutoCAD. The lecturers said that it’s better for us to finish up drawing shophouse in Autodesk VIZ before we start on the real shophouse model. This is because we can have the right measurements in Autodesk VIZ and when we do the real shophouse model, we can refer directly to the shophouse measurements in Autodesk VIZ.

Still continuing with the shophouse mockup model. I find it challenging when creating space for the client, as I need to consider whether the space is big enough or too small for the client to do the particular activity in that space. So, I created bigger spaces for my client, instead of “just nice”. If the spaces are too small, the client will get restricted by the spaces when moving around it.

For this few weeks, there will be consultation all the way. All of us need to consult the lecturer taking the class, even if we do not have any questions to ask them. This is to allow them to see how we are proceeding and whether we are on the right track. I consulted Kelly and he told me to take out the second storey floor so that I will not get restricted by the floor. Therefore, I created some of the spaces at different height.

At this point of time, all of us already started with the shophouse mockup model. Before that, we need to consider what space our client needs. The lecturers wanted us to name it as “space for eating, space for sleeping…” instead of “dinning place, bedroom”.

After I do out the mood box, I consulted Kelly and he told me something which I never think of. He told me that openness does not really means that everything is opened. Some parts can be opened and clear, while others can be closed and covered. After listening to what he said, I used some pieces of paper and covered some parts of the mood box and to create interesting spaces at the same time.

Today is the first day of the Sem 2, last term. We showed the lecturers our mood box. I consulted King Yong. My mood box wasn’t accepted, as it’s not really a mood box, but rather a space. Therefore, he explained to me what a mood box really is and the idea on how to make a mood box. A mood box is something that shows the concepts, but not the space. For my new mood box, I used PVC sheet to show the characteristics of glass as it is clear and at the same time to show the openness.

Today is the submission of all the projects. After submission, lecturers brief us about projects that we are going to do next term, which is the last term of Year 1. There are a lot of projects for us to complete in term 4, which I doubt I can finish. For Design Studio, we need to make a 200mm x 200mm x 200mm mood box of the concept of our artist during the three weeks of holidays.

Another new project was launched today. At first, there’s lecture about human body. During the lecture, lecturer gave as a short wire and wanted us to make something for a part of our body to wear. Shortly after this exercise is the launch of new project. Everyone is so shocked that at this point of time, there’s still new project to do. We haven’t even finished the shophouse project and yet there’s a new project. But the good news for this project is that it’s not individual project, but a project of a group of up to four people. This project requires us to make a new machine to enhance our senses.

Today is the searching of shophouse day. We are split into two small groups to search for the shophouse. The two small groups are assigned to two different locations. I’m in the first small group and we are assigned to go Chinatown. As for the second small group, they are assigned to go Haji Lane. It’s raining, but this does not stop us from searching the shophouse. The type of shophouse that we’re looking for is not easy to find. Some people in the shophouse don’t know the type of shophouse as they are just a staff in the shop and the owner isn’t there. Therefore, we went on searching again and finally we found one. The owners of the shophouse are very kind and even helped us measure. In return, we treat them coffee. In the end, both small groups found one shophouse each and measured. The final shophouse they chose is from Haji Lane.

There’s a new project launched today. For this new project, it’s quite a special case, as it concern two modules, which is Design Studio and CADP. We are to find and measure a kind of shophouse assigned to each group. Luckily for this project, it’s not individual, but group work. If not, it will be very tough. All of us can choose which group we want to go to. But each group must have around 17 members, a leader and assistant leader. I’m in Hidayat’s group and XiangLing is the assistant leader. The type shophouse we need to find and measure are two storeys, have airwell and five foot path, but no rear court.

The submission date for the Exercises is becoming nearer and nearer. There’s still more for me to complete. And there’s the 40 photos assignment. For that assignment, we are to take four continuous photos of an action we doing, and mount in on two A1 board. We must apply what we’ve learnt during the photography workshop to this.

Nothing much about today. I just continued with my In-Tech Exercises.

Friday, 24/10/08
Just as when I thought there’s only Exercise 1&2, Exercise 3&4 launched. For Exercise 3, we need to find and draw the plan and section of 3 different types of staircases, with the real measurements. As for Exercise 4, we need to draw human with the furniture he/she interact with. Exercise 3 is quite challenging as we need to find the real staircase, measure and draw.

For today, we just continued with the assignments given on Monday. And we can consult the lecturers if we are not sure of anything. We need to draw out the side view too, if the side view helps us to see the movement clearly.

After having one week of photography workshop, we started off with In-Tech first. This means that for this few weeks, we will be having In-Tech. For today, we had lecture on Ergonomics & Anthropometrics. This lecture taught us about human bodies and the relationship between human body and the furniture we interact with. After that, we had some assignments to do. We are to draw out human with different positions, be it stationary or moving. We had to produce 16 each.

Today is the forth day of the photography workshop. For today, it’s not as fun as yesterday, because there’s no outdoor activity, but just lecture. In this lecture, we’ve learnt how to modify original photos into better ones. This is a very useful lecture as we can now improve our look in Facebook and MSN!

Today is the third day of the photography workshop. For today, it’s quite different as all of us went to Little India to take good photos. We are to take photos according to the themes given from the lecturers teaching us photography. Although the whether is very hot, but we still manage to complete the assignment.

Today is the second day of the photography workshop. As usual, we had lecture. But after that, we get to do some practical. We are to get into groups and take photos of some of our Design Studio projects. In this practical, I’ve learnt how to take good photos of my Design Studio project using lightings, although it’s not really easy to do so.

Today is the first day of Sem 2. For the first week of school, we will be having photography workshop. Although I don’t really like photography, but I found the lecture quite interesting as it teaches me new things on photography. There are theories as well as practical. We are grouped into 4 groups – green, blue, red & yellow. And I’m in the green group. We are supposed to take photos according to our grouping. As I’m in the green group, I need to take photos with lots of green in it.
